FRITZ!Box 7690: When Wi-Fi 7 really makes a difference at home

A modern DSL router with faster network connections, but not an automatic reason to replace a working FRITZ!Box.

An upgrade needs a specific reason

Moving from an older FRITZ!Box to the 7690 brings several understandable changes. The wired connections can be just as interesting as the wireless features.

Still, I would not justify replacement simply by saying that Wi-Fi 7 is newer. A purchase decision should explain which task will be handled better.

I am happy with my own 7590. For me, the 7690 would therefore be a possible development if my requirements changed, not a necessary replacement because of its model number.

What is technically different

The 7690 supports DSL up to 300 Mbit/s and Wi-Fi 7 on 2.4 and 5 GHz. It does not have a 6 GHz band. It also provides one combined 2.5-Gigabit WAN/LAN port, another 2.5-Gigabit LAN port and two Gigabit LAN ports. [1]

The manufacturer explicitly described it as a dual-band model at its introduction on 3 June 2024. The simultaneously introduced 5690 Pro adds 6 GHz. Wi-Fi 7 does not automatically mean all three bands are available. [2]

That distinction matters more to a buyer than the largest possible combined wireless figure on a box.

Current prices: Around €249, not an assumed premium

For a difference of 99 cents, I would not spend long chasing the last saving. Availability, a clearly identified seller and the right product variant would matter more to me.

Cashback, a compulsory broadband contract and returning old equipment were not included in the comparison.

Wi-Fi 7 needs suitable devices at both ends

Multi-Link Operation, or MLO, is one of Wi-Fi 7's capabilities. Suitable devices can use multiple wireless links. Both router and client need the required support, and the manufacturer's configuration requirements also apply. [4]

An older notebook does not suddenly gain all the capabilities of a new wireless generation when the router changes.

I would start with an inventory: which computers and mobile devices are present, which are likely to be replaced, and where the connection is currently too slow or unstable.

Nor does a modern router turn a subscribed 100 Mbit/s internet service into a faster plan. Benefits may arise within the home network, for local transfers or several active devices. Whether they are noticeable needs checking in that household.

Faster LAN ports can matter more than wireless

A practical example would be network storage and a workstation that both support 2.5-Gigabit Ethernet.

When the 7690 is connected directly to DSL, its combined WAN/LAN connection can serve as LAN, giving two 2.5-Gigabit ports. If that connection is needed for an external internet modem, only the second fast port remains available for the home network. [1]

I would sketch that allocation before buying. Two fast connections do not mean two free fast connections for local devices in every operating mode.

An additional switch may make sense when expanding the network, but the actual data paths and equipment requirements should be clear first.

Not every older connection is retained

The 7690 provides DECT, two analogue telephone connections and a Zigbee base for supported smart-home devices. There is no ISDN S₀ port. It has one USB 2.0 port, whereas the original 7590 has two USB 3.0 ports as well as S₀. [1][5]

Many households will not mind. Anyone who uses precisely those connections should notice the difference before unpacking the replacement.

Zigbee is not a promise that every existing smart-home device can be integrated. I would check compatibility information for the particular devices before planning a combined setup. [1]

Prepare a router change properly

Before switching, I would back up the existing configuration and record the functions in use: internet access, telephony, fixed device assignments, guest access and required remote connections.

Afterwards, I would check those functions individually. A smartphone connecting successfully to wireless does not prove that telephony and all previous connections are working.

For a poorly covered room, a comparison at the actual usage location matters. A higher wireless standard does not replace sensible positioning and network design.

I would call the upgrade successful only when existing work still functions and the expected advantage is visible.

My conclusion: Interesting for new requirements, not a compulsory purchase

The 7690 is particularly interesting for a household buying a DSL router or making specific use of Wi-Fi 7 and faster Ethernet.

For satisfied owners of a suitable 7590, replacing it is not a foregone conclusion.

My yardstick stays the same: a new router should remove an identifiable bottleneck or add required functions. Merely being newer is not enough.
